Your quilt is looking beautiful... I want to make a zigzag one now! A tip my mom uses when laying out a quilt is looking at it through the wrong end of binoculars... you can see the whole quilt in miniature, and its easier to see if you like the layout!

I'm sure it will be amazing no matter how it turns out!! I have done a few quilt tops, but I've never gotten around to finishing them. I should really make that a goal this year. Oh, and I should do a small one instead of a king-size like I normally do!! I always bite off more than I can chew...

Loved this post, Shannon! It's really helpful to hear from someone who doesn't quilt a ton about how the experience feels to you. You know, I don't think of quilting as permanent. You can always rip seams! But, I don't think you'll have to with that design wall. I wanna one!

oh, yeah! being able to pin it up and step back makes a HUGE difference. i just use painters tape to attach my blocks to the wall, so i just might try that blanket trick. i'm working on a quilt with some improv blocks (of kona solids and echo)... i was surprised how difficult it can be to put together seemingly simple blocks.

I don't think that's nuts at all. That's what I mean about the permanence of it all. It takes me forever to decide too. That's why I've just left it hanging there so I can "feel it" for a while and live with it. But then again, maybe we are both just nuts?? LOL..at least we can be nuts together.

I won't start quilting. I am not a perfectionist; I really enjoy getting things done, so I tend to rush. My mom quilts and she is much more the perfectionist.

Shannon the quilt looks amazing :) I can't wait to see the final product. This spring I hope to start a quilt for the little guy I've been thinking about design and colour choices for about a year now... I know a year is a long time but when you put so much time and effort into a project you want it to be just right... Is it just me, am I crazy? When we were painting the house I had 32 different shades of green and yellow test swatches on the family room wall.... After about 3 months the hubs couldn't take it any longer and covered them with inked paper.... Nuts I know :)

Well I'll be honest in that the finishing is the challenging part for me…because I find it so tedious…not because it's difficult. It's probably why I don't quilt…though if you keep posting quilts I just might start up again…

If I were doing this quilt, I'd stick with like colors and make a cascade of zig-zags through the rainbow…but that's just my style. I LOVE what you've laid out and if I ever get back into quilting I will totally use the blanket trick :)

Your quilt looks great, Shannon! I just got myself a flannel-backed tablecloth from the dollar store and now I have my own design wall too! It can indeed be a challenge when there are so many possible layout options. It's great that you're taking photos of your quilt because somehow seeing it on the camera or computer allows you to see how you like the layout.

We had a design wall up at our Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild sew-in on Sunday and it was so helpful. I was laying out a quilt and had input from 4-5 other quilters. It was awesome! I'm working on a red/aqua/green square in a square quilt for my daughter.

I'd have to say picking out the fabrics and design, then piecing and seeing it all come together are my favourite parts. Basting and quilting are my least favourite. I actually love hand stitching my binding, I find it meditative and rewarding.

Love your quilt! I've always used a cheap plastic tablecloth with flannel back for my design wall, thumbtacked to the wall. That way If i don't want to sew a quilt together right away, but need the design wall, I can take the tablecloth down and fold the quilt within it. Transportable, too!

This has been one of my favorite parts so far. I loved laying it out. I don't have a wall to hang it on so I safety pinned the squares to an old sheet. Then rolled up the sheet to store it.
