i also just finished up what i hope will be my next knitting pattern. i got to use this delicious madeline tosh dk in colorway glazed pecan from one of my fave brick/mortar yarn shops - urban yarns (seriously if you are in vancouver it's a must visit)....YUM! look for the pattern coming soon!

i'm also still working on a full pattern for the sweetheart dress for you guys. i've been working on doing the grading myself but would prefer to hire that part out as i have more designs in the works that i would like to sell. problem is i am having a super hard time finding a pattern grader or a business who does this. i would love to keep it local (British Columbia) or at least in Canada but am open to having it done in the US as well. do any of you know anyone who does this or do any of you do this? thanks in advance for all of your help with this :)

this is the portion of the quilt i'm having the hardest time matching up tones with. the cooler pinks keep clashing with the tones i would pick to bind/border with for the upper half of the quilt. honestly, i've asked so many people and i just keep going back and forth...lol. at this point i'm really leaning towards just binding off. i really don't want to add a border and if i do i think i'm leaning towards a wide border of white and then a smaller border of the orange print below.
but then i also have this yellow print. the pic doesn't show it very well. it's softer and more of a darker version of the yellow in the quilt but i don't like it with the backing. so if i bind with it i don't think i'll be happy with it against the backing fabric.
here's the whole front below...bear with my bad pics...there's not a lot of good light where my quilt is hanging at the moment.
ok so....thoughts? should i:
a) bind off and leave it the size it is? and if so what color would you bind off with?
b) add a border? and if so what color/size would you border it with? do you agree with white and then a smaller of orange? the orange looks bad right up against the quilt due to it clashing with the pink tones on the bottom of the quilt.

i would love any of your thoughts. i love that you all have helped me with this whole quilt. it's so fun!!! it's definitely a learning process and when you are winging things sometimes another eye is a good thing. i've stared at it everyday for months now and just can't seem to make up my mind.
what are you all working on? any exciting projects in the works? i'd love to hear about them!

ok, is the sarah jane the backing print? i'm not awake either apparently ;) i think.... thick white border, thinner yellow border, bind in orange print. that's it. i've decided!! well, it helps me decide for mine, at least. hehe

DeleteI like the idea of doing the white for a thicker border too but if I do that I have to wait for an order of it as I have none left :( Boo.
I do like the white then yellow then orange...I'll have to see what the yellow looks like right up against the orange though. I may have to add the white in between the two. Will be interesting to see. Off to check it out xoxoxox
Oooh, can't wait to see what you are sewing for yourself. I just finished the Lisette Diplomat dress and I love it. My "muslin" is very wearable and I am pretty happy that it was not a waste of fabric. I have plans for another one in a linen blend now.
ReplyDeleteOhhh, I love it when that happens! These are muslins of sort for me too. I'm trying them out with these fabrics and if I love them will make them again in more expensive stuff :)
DeleteOh dude, I am so bad at this. Maybe...huh. I think what *I* might do, and this is just me - but I would probably add some white space around the quilt and then just bind it. I love the orange fabric but I am having a hard time visualizing it next to the lighter colours at the bottom of the quilt. A bit of white space around the zig zags might buy you a bit of room (so you don't have to worry about colour RIGHT next to the zig zags)?

I've been kid-sewing entirely more than I meant to lately; I was planning to declare May "selfish sewing month" and now...lookithat, it's May 15 and here I am with no sewing done for me. Boo. DeleteI just finished a zig zag quilt and didn't bother with a border. But I don't know what color I'd use for binding this one. Can you do a verigated binding. Use a bunch of different fabrics so it's a scrappy binding?
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt!! I would do no border with pale blue or yellow binding. And I wouldn't worry to much about colors classing in spots. If you really love the orange just go for it!! Kimberly
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! I don't know much about this part of the quilt-making process, but have you considered a shade of grey? I don't mean to sound boring. I'm in love with grey lately and it might be enough of a contrast to not clash horribly with any section, and then ease the transition from the front to the back, regardless of whether you include a border. I think I would include a border, personally. A nice wide one.

great that its almost finished...so border vs binding...how about a graded colour border so colours dont clash????

you know...if it were me I would probably just bind it! I love how the zig zags make a statement on their own. if that makes any sense. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI vote for binding it off in white (thin, like 1/2"). The quilt looks AMAZING by the way... and truly all of your ideas would looks great too (sorry, that was not the thing to say since you are indecisive at the moment, but hopefully it confirms whatever you are leaning toward).
ReplyDeleteLooking at the quilt in its entirety I say white with a tiny bit of the orange. I think orange would be a great frame on it.
