Quilting 911 - head over heels in love

oh my...last night i fell in love with hst. no not our dreaded canadian tax but "half square triangles".  oh yes, i fell head over heels in love.  i have never done a hst before being a newbie quilter but let me just say they are fun!  i got so excited i even bored the hubby to death with all my quilting giddiness...poor guy :P

i took a charm pack of oliver & s city weekend and a charm pack of white fabric that my lovely sponsor stitchsimple.com just sent me (yes, she even cuts to your request and washes/presses your fabric!) and matched those puppies all up, drew my lines, sewed my stitches and cut my triangles and i made it through almost the whole stack in under half an hour!!!! now that is what i like people!  hardly any cutting! woot woot!  you guys all know how bad i am with a rotary cutter..lol...useless :P

1. city weekend by oliver + s 2. balloon in aqua from children at play by sarah jane
i decided the other week to make a zig zag quilt for mackenzie's quilt of choice.  i'm supposed to be making a queen size for me but the poor thing was so sad when she saw harper's that i promised her i would make one for her too with a "m" on the back to match harper's "h".  after a lot of drooling all over flickr and pinterest i got sucked in by the purl bee's and cluck cluck sew's zig zag quilt and was stuck on the combo of the white with the printed fabric.  after using a lot of bright colors for harper's quilt i liked the idea of doing a softer yet still colorful palette for mack's.  i'm also hoping that it will match up with my beloved balloon print from sarah jane's children at play line for the backing.  i bought enough of it in the summertime in the hopes that i could use it for the backing of a quilt.

1. cluck cluck sew 2. the purl bee
i've been following the purl bee zig zag quilt tutorial and also relied on the lovely rachel of  p.s. i quilt's half square triangle tutorial just to make sure i was doing it right :)  now i whipped through mine pretty fast so i'm hoping my accuracy is still good and that i didn't wonk anything up.

i already had one oopsie though...one of my charm squares was stuck to the other (same print on top of it) and i unknowingly sewed the two identical prints to 1 white square and didn't realize i had done this till after i cut it! eeeek! anybody have any tips on how i can fix this???  i haven't ripped it out yet.  i could use any tips any of your master quilters may have :)

i'm super excited to just power through this quilt but not sure how much time i'll get to work on it.  our modern sewing group is in lingo as we are homeless.  the lovely sewing shop we were being housed at has changed ownership and is moving so we are still in the process of finding out what and where we are going.  i'm bummed though because that was pretty much dedicated time for me to quilt.  hopefully everything will work out in the end and someone will adopt us :)  in the meantime i'm sure i'll be dreaming of hst's.....

have you made a zig zag quilt before?  any tips?  are you a lover of all things hst?  what is your favorite quilt pattern to make using an hst block?  i can't wait to hear what you all are working on!

  2. I just made my first HST quilt before Christmas but didn't lay it out as a zigzag. The most work comes in trimming all of them down! Here's mine: http://makingmorewithless.blogspot.com/2012/01/quilt-for-my-midwife.html
As for your "oops" I would just pick it apart and resew :) It's going to look great!

  5. I have bookmarked so many HST quilts, I could sew nothing but and go on forever. Of course they make so many other things (stars and claws and whatnot), but I love quilts that just highlight the triangle. Here are some of my very favorites:

  7. I've made a couple of quilts years ago but i really didn't know what i was doing... so i bought Whip Up's Mini Quilt book (just came in the mail today!)with the hopes of honing some good quilting skills. then i hope to make one for each of the kids and myself. i think zig zags are my fav for any type of blanket whether quilted, knitted or hooked.

  9. I used the same material last year for a quilt for my daughter. I had planned on doing hst, but I just couldn't cut the fabric. I loved it so much. So I did basic huge quilt blocks. I love it. You can see bits of it here: http://www.esmerlda27.blogspot.com/2010/12/last-minute-push.html

  12. I just finished my first quilt top using HST! I did alternating zig zags of solid deep teal and white and LOVE it. I'm stumped on binding though- stick with a solid (like mustard) or a fun pattern? (p.s. I'm Lindsay and I've been really enjoying your blog for the past year or so. All the dresses you've sewn for your girls inspired me to sew clothes for my little girl too. And your posts about knitting are killing me- I so want to learn!) Thanks!

    1. Hi Lindsay! Thanks for the comment :) I would go with a fun pattern but I guess that would be depending on how busy your fabric is in the quilt. Do you have a pic? Can't wait to see it.
      Thx for the kind words!

  13. I love your HSTs! I feel your pain on lacking your quilt group. I joined my local guild in October and love it. Have you thought of checking with your local churches? My guild alternates between a church fellowship hall and a bank community room. (I'm new so I can't say whether we have to pay rent to use these spaces, but our membership dues aren't very much so I doubt if there is rent that it's very high.) You might also check with some of the local restaurants with party rooms. If you're showing up in the afternoon when it's dead maybe they'd let you use it if everyone agrees to purchase a snack or drink. Hope you guys find a home soon!

    1. Thanks Kymberly, I hope we do too. We started looking into churches but they were way too expensive. Can you believe it??? Hopefully someone adopts us soon.

  14. I love HSTs so much! They're so versatile and a classic zig zag is a great quilt! The balloon print is so sweet and will make a perfect backing!

  15. Okay... that zig zag quilt is THE first quilt that has tempted me at all. I am not a precise person... too impatient. But those little hst thingys don't look too hard and that quilt is stinking cute.

I feel a summer project brewing...

  16. What a lovely little quilt this will be! I'm going to link to this on FB. I'm so glad you liked your custom cut charm squares.... and in case no one else has yet offered this suggestion for your whoops, it looks from the photo like you can just rip out that seam and sew it back together with just one piece. That would then leave a solo printed HST and you would just have to manually cut a white one to sew it to. Hopefully that makes sense. Email me if you need me to explain better.

  17. FYI - Our sponsor Stitch Simple is where I got my white squares from. They are a lovely white sateen from Harmony Art Organic Design. Stitch Simple is always open for custom orders so don't ever feel limited to their stock size options (plus they can cut them straight or pinked if you prefer them to match up better to other precuts you might already have). Love it! (www.stitchsimple.com)

  18. Oh I love me a chevron quilt. I made my son's last summer in a twin size with alternating white rows and Alexander Henry's 2d zoo in Pool. I absolutely loved how it turned out! I did the same thing with sewing two squares together. Oops! I just pulled out my seam ripper, took the extra square off and resewed the other triangles back together. Can't wait to see the finished quilt!

  19. this quilt is going to be stunning! I'm doing a HST quilt for our wee man (veeery slowly) I have the squares cut out but have only sewed a couple together because they seemed to wonk a little sewing across from corner to corner down the bias. I suspect I will be trimming them all down later so they are perfect, like Rita from Red Pepper Quilts.

  20. I love that quilt idea! I've never made a huge quilt before but my son really needs one for his bed and since I just can't find the right one I ought to just make it! Thanks for the great idea! I like that it's got lots of white in it and then you can just choose great fabrics that you like for colour. Can't wait to see how yours turns out!

  21. OOohhh, I'm excited to see this when it's done! I had started a zig zag quilt for my son a few years ago but alas, never finished...he all of a sudden started to become mobile and I wasn't able to sew without him all over the place! Hopefully, one day soon I'll be able to go back to it. Although, I might have to add to it now since he'll no longer need it for his crib!
