quilting 911 - hanging with the zig zags
i've been hanging with the zig zags. just chilling out...you know...zigging here and zagging there...going with the flow. i got all my hst's sewn up last week & i started to plan out my quilt. i thought it would be quick and easy. boy was i wrong....lol.
i think the pic above is about my 20th layout. i haven't changed anything for over 24 hours now so i think i am close. it took a while to decide what tones to move with and where to start and what and how to mix the prints. i kept focusing on the row of zig zags but then would stand back and remind myself it's also a block of four charm squares that make the point of the zig zag so i had to start looking at it in 2 rows instead of just one as well. tricky i say.
thankfully one of my pals at knit night gave me a wonderful tip. i was moaning and groaning about how hard it was to plan the schematics of this quilt by laying it on the floor and always having to take pics of it, look, change it and then put it away and start all over again the next day when i have a chance to lay it out again. pain in the butt. i was fed up. she told me i needed to start a quilt wall. she suggested getting a cheap blanket/picnic blanket and hang it from the wall with pins so that i can stand back and really see the quilt and also not have to take it down.
let me tell you, this has changed my whole quilting experience! thank you so much sarah! i have a cheap ikea polar fleece type blanket at home and hung that puppy up on the wall and pinned my hst's to it as fast as i could. the best part about this blanket is the fabric actually clings to it. i really could have prolly got away with not pinning them but was worried the kids would grab them off.
i have spent a lot of time in what i like to call "creative land" feeling like the dude from a beautiful mind trying to solve some intense puzzle. i keep getting lost in the lines and the patterns. then, when i'm done...i'm exhausted...lol. my brain hurts...lol. anyone else get like this when trying really hard to solve a creative puzzle? my mom says this is one of her favorite parts of quilting and i can see how some would love it but i find it hard to push through.
i think my favorite part of the quilting process, has been so far, the actual sewing. i love starting with all these pieces and then ending with a quilt top. i adore the actual quilting. so fun. what i don't adore is all the decisions. i know that sounds weird but with a quilt it all feels so permanent. like once it's sewn you are stuck with it. where as with clothing i change and alter as i go. i guess i have to get used to feeling confident in my eye and my own creative process. i think it's a great way for us creative peeps to strengthen different parts of our creativity by challenging ourselves regularly by doing what we wouldn't normally be doing. it's one of my new year's resolutions this year to challenge myself, push myself and step out into the unknown a bit. i want to flex a bit more creative muscle and really jump in head first (in a somewhat controlled manner..lol) and just see what happens. i'm excited, a tad scared but i've also have been having a heckuva lot of fun!
so grab yourself a cheap blanket, pin that bad boy to the wall and have some fun! but most importantly get quilting! go ahead...give it a try! it's fun and oh, so addicting! thanks again sarah! i owe ya one my dear :)
what quilt are you working on? what's your favorite part of the quilting process? do you find one area challenging for you? c'mon...spill the beans my friends :)

i'm such a newbie quilter, and i have to say that sewing is my fave part... the colour selections KILL me. honestly, i feel so overwhelmed with colour choices! you've seen me in a yarn store.. i can never make up my mind. haha. i loove the quilt so far though! it's looking fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI'm chuckling to myself here Becca…I love making color choices! My favorite thing of all time :) Well just after dying fabric to be the perfect color. :)
DeleteI'm the same too many colour choices an my head starts to spin :)
DeleteMe too...and i hate, hate, hate cutting. I have officially decided I am the worst rotary cutter :)
DeleteLOVE the zigzags, girl. I have been working a bit at a time on a quilt for our new home, but it is often sidelined by the work I have to do building that home right now. Maybe I'll get them both done at the same time. :)
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to see both done Chris. I can imagine how gorgeous they will both turn out.

DeleteThis has been one of my favorite parts so far. I loved laying it out. I don't have a wall to hang it on so I safety pinned the squares to an old sheet. Then rolled up the sheet to store it.
ReplyDeletethat's a great idea too :)
DeleteLove your quilt! I've always used a cheap plastic tablecloth with flannel back for my design wall, thumbtacked to the wall. That way If i don't want to sew a quilt together right away, but need the design wall, I can take the tablecloth down and fold the quilt within it. Transportable, too!
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome to have it be so portable. I love it!
DeleteYour quilt looks great, Shannon! I just got myself a flannel-backed tablecloth from the dollar store and now I have my own design wall too! It can indeed be a challenge when there are so many possible layout options. It's great that you're taking photos of your quilt because somehow seeing it on the camera or computer allows you to see how you like the layout.
ReplyDeleteWe had a design wall up at our Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild sew-in on Sunday and it was so helpful. I was laying out a quilt and had input from 4-5 other quilters. It was awesome! I'm working on a red/aqua/green square in a square quilt for my daughter.
I'd have to say picking out the fabrics and design, then piecing and seeing it all come together are my favourite parts. Basting and quilting are my least favourite. I actually love hand stitching my binding, I find it meditative and rewarding.
Oh gosh, I can only imagine how fun that would be!!! Awesome is right! I owe ya an email and I promise it's coming your way soon. My inbox has taken over this week I tell ya :)
DeleteWell I'll be honest in that the finishing is the challenging part for me…because I find it so tedious…not because it's difficult. It's probably why I don't quilt…though if you keep posting quilts I just might start up again…
ReplyDeleteIf I were doing this quilt, I'd stick with like colors and make a cascade of zig-zags through the rainbow…but that's just my style. I LOVE what you've laid out and if I ever get back into quilting I will totally use the blanket trick :)
I will convince you to quilt. I will :P
DeleteThat's an awesome idea about the wall blanket!
ReplyDeleteShannon the quilt looks amazing :) I can't wait to see the final product. This spring I hope to start a quilt for the little guy I've been thinking about design and colour choices for about a year now... I know a year is a long time but when you put so much time and effort into a project you want it to be just right... Is it just me, am I crazy? When we were painting the house I had 32 different shades of green and yellow test swatches on the family room wall.... After about 3 months the hubs couldn't take it any longer and covered them with inked paper.... Nuts I know :)
I don't think that's nuts at all. That's what I mean about the permanence of it all. It takes me forever to decide too. That's why I've just left it hanging there so I can "feel it" for a while and live with it. But then again, maybe we are both just nuts?? LOL..at least we can be nuts together.
DeleteI won't start quilting. I am not a perfectionist; I really enjoy getting things done, so I tend to rush. My mom quilts and she is much more the perfectionist.
ReplyDeleteThat is going to be one GORGEOUS zig zag quilt! And yes, a design wall is practically essential when you're quilting in a house with kids. ;] Can't wait to see the finished thing!
ReplyDeleteoh, yeah! being able to pin it up and step back makes a HUGE difference. i just use painters tape to attach my blocks to the wall, so i just might try that blanket trick. i'm working on a quilt with some improv blocks (of kona solids and echo)... i was surprised how difficult it can be to put together seemingly simple blocks.
ReplyDeleteI have a wall in my sewing room that I've been wanting to use as a design wall, but I was unsure of how to go about it. Thanks everyone for the ideas! I actually have two quilts in progress right now. This one...
ReplyDeletehttp://diythirdtimesacharm.blogspot.com/2012/01/emma-quilt-top.html is now quilted and just waiting for me to finish the hand sewing on the binding. Yay!
And this one...
http://diythirdtimesacharm.blogspot.com/2011/12/log-cabin-quilt-top.html
has been basted for a while. I just need to work up the enthusiasm to quilt it. It's only twin sized, but that's a lot of material to move around on my little machine! :)
Loved this post, Shannon! It's really helpful to hear from someone who doesn't quilt a ton about how the experience feels to you. You know, I don't think of quilting as permanent. You can always rip seams! But, I don't think you'll have to with that design wall. I wanna one!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it will be amazing no matter how it turns out!! I have done a few quilt tops, but I've never gotten around to finishing them. I should really make that a goal this year. Oh, and I should do a small one instead of a king-size like I normally do!! I always bite off more than I can chew...
ReplyDeleteLOVE, LOVE, LOVE! And I think the layout is fantastic.....don't change a thing!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is looking beautiful... I want to make a zigzag one now! A tip my mom uses when laying out a quilt is looking at it through the wrong end of binoculars... you can see the whole quilt in miniature, and its easier to see if you like the layout!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is so beautiful - I love the whole zigzag layout and the fabric combos!! I'm taking my first patchwork course next week - and can't wait - so excited!! PS... the whole idea of a quilt wall is brilliant!!!
