to seriously debate wearing a cute turquoise helmet...

to get cracking on making some knee high boot socks...

to continue to be inspired by the classics...

to get my collection of jars prettied up...

and to get caught up on my sewing.

hi you guys.  just popping in with a quick weekend wishes.  i've missed you all this week and i've missed poppy the pfaff.  i haven't sewn since last friday :(  it's killing me.  i have been knitting a ton though so that's been fab and very relaxing.  thanks for all of your well wishes.  my head is still hurting and i'm still not feeling that great but my doctor said that post concussion syndrome can take anywhere from weeks to months before you start to feel better.  here's hoping it will be sooner than later for me.

i'm dragging myself out to knit night come hell or high water.  i missed last week and i need it bad.  it's been a very, very hard week taking care of the kids by myself while the hubs has been studying for his exam today all while recovering from a concussion.  man oh man what i wouldn't give for a nanny..haha.  i have to admit going to bed early has helped me catch up on some much needed sleep though.  y'all know i'm a late night blogger :)

i'm hoping you all had fab weeks and wishing you all an equally as fabulous weekend filled with sewing, knitting, yummy treats, cozy fall breezes, cuddles and laughs.  looking forward to catching up with you all next week.

what have you been crafting this week?  any new projects on the go?  what are your weekend wishes? come share, it will help me ignore the construction workers drilling concrete outside my window....sooooo loud :(

Momma's got a boo boo...

momma's got a boo boo.  for those of you who follow my facebook page you may  have heard me ranting about the foolishness of hitting my silly head not once...but twice with my trunk door on friday afternoon.  seriously...i am a clumsy dork.  don't ask me how i did it twice, it's humiliating...i know..but i blame it all on my car and not on myself.  needless to say i hit myself really hard.  so hard that by later that night i was not a happy camper.

i finally inspected my head and was freaked out to find some cuts/scratches from the trunk door.  damn you car!  don't you know i have sheat to do!  how dare you bonk me really hard twice and expect me to feel dandy as candy!  my car...whose name is vroom vroom veronica by the way (you know how i love to name things) and i are NOT on speaking terms.  i fear our relationship will be scarred forever.  how could she leave me standing stunned staring at my hand over and over checking for blood in the grocery store parking lot?  friggin car..lol...i give her gas and drive her...i mean i know i could clean  her more but honestly, what more can a car ask for?

so by saturday i was a gong show mess.  dizzy, nauseous and a crying fool.  i missed my knit night, screwed up my hubs exam studying schedule and pretty much slept away the day.  before you ask i went to the doctor at the walk in clinic who quickly dismissed me telling me i hit my head and to go rest.  old fart.  just for the record i detest old, grumpy rude doctors.  especially when one is a crying, throbbing head of a mess.  what ever happened to compassion buddy?

anyways, sorry for this weird ol' rant of a post but long story short...i will be absent (sort of) today and maybe tomorrow while i heal my bonked head and attempt to take care of my kidlets until my eyes focus better and i stop feeling so gosh darn off balance.  i don't dare sew for fear of messing up my projects big time so i've been knitting up a storm to try to cheer myself up. i agree with my pal sarah that i think i need a helmet and also yes amy, i think this shirt would be fitting as well :P

*updated to add (09/27/2011): i went to my family doctor today and found out i did indeed get a concussion and now have post concussion syndrome. i'm feeling pretty crappy so taking a few more days off. thanks for all your comments and well wishes.  you guys are so sweet :)

i hope you all had a wonderful weekend that was injury free and filled with fun and crafting galore!  are you clumsy like me too?  i'd love to feel less like a dork so if you have a funny, clumsy story to share please do.  it would make me feel sooooo much better :)  i promise the coffee's on and there's a warm, cozy seat here for ya...come chat!

weekend wishes

to get a shirt with this on it...

to get some serious sleep...

to get some exciting mail...

to get my quilt done and ready to bind...

to eat these...

that this isn't wasn't me to a tee...

to feel the fall breeze...

to find some time to paint...

and to get my pile of magazines read.

weeee...it's the weekend! well, kind of a weekend for us.  the hubs will be around on sunday so i can whoop it up at my modern sewing group!  i love these crafty weekends.  the last weekend of every month is like a mini xmas for me.  knit night on saturday and then modern sewing group on sunday for 4 hours! it's like a dream.  i have to pinch myself sometimes :)

i'm pretty burnt out this week.  feeling a tad overwhelmed by my home to tell you the truth.  i'm still purging and rearranging and trying to streamline everything to make it as easy as possible to stay on top of the chores.  i feel like i'm losing the battle still but i'm getting my fight on..haha.  i've decided not to let the laundry monster win.  we are going to be in this place for a long time yet and i've got to make the most of the space we have...it's not a lot but if i'm creative i think we can make it work.  the hard part is it takes time to do all this organization and let me tell you...time is one thing i already don't have enough of and family time and sewing/knitting always come before chores in my book..haha.  that may be a fault, but hey...life is a lot more fun than cleaning :)

i keep trying to get pictures of some of the most gorgeous yarn i have ever had in my life but the pics just don't do it justice.  honestly.  the color is to die for!  it's the richest, brightest, loveliest turquoise you have ever seen!  the yarn is by sweet georgia (a vancouver artisan yarn company) and it's tough sock love in colorway saltwater.  felicia's yarns are to die for & the colors...scrumptious!!!  i'm using my skein for part of the "rae knit along" by jane richmond.  one of my current fave patterns...it's so addicting i tell ya.  yep, i'm nuts and doing a knit along and organizing my own in the same month..haha.  i'm gonna be getting my knit on and then happily rockin' my turquoise rae around town :)

i'm also busy working on a few more tutorials for you as well as a few patterns i may be releasing this year! exciting!!!  in between that i have some sketching to do, catching up with an old friend, hanging with my knitting & sewing ladies, snuggling the hubs (when he's home), hanging with my wee ones and hopefully, hopefully, hopefully, gettting a bit of rest....cause lord i could use it :)

wishing you all a wonderful, crafty, fall weather filled, warm pumpkin spice latte, cozy snuggles, family filled weekend!  what are you up to?  i can't wait to hear your weekend wishes...comment ladies...it makes my day to hear what you've been up to :)

Summer Sweater Knit Along - My project!

sorry about the delayed post ladies.  i had some big time internet probs yesterday.  was kind of a good thing in the end because i go to unplug a bit and get some big time knitting in.  can't wait to show you all what i have been stitching away at..and no...don't worry, it wasn't my KAL project - that's been done a while now (my knit night gals can attest to that).  it's just taken me this long to get pics due to the husband/wife photo session relationship i have..haha.  actually, this one wasn't so bad but it was rushed and the kids were not cooperating plus all the days i had good hair the hubs didn't have time to shoot the pics so you are stuck with my dirty mommy hair day :P  you know you have them too...haha...don't judge me :)

so my sweater for the KAL is done.  i have a love/hate relationship with it.  i've worn it out a few times and am slowly bonding with it.  the blocking helped a ton and the stitches have loosened and lay flatter now which is nice.  here's the deets on my kal project:

pattern: the effortless cardigan by the fabulous hannah fettig of knitbot
needle: 5.5mm knitpicks nickel plated interchangeable

this sweater fits me perfectly everywhere but the front sides.  honestly, i was so picky about fit and adjusted the sleeves and back to fit my bod but never thought to check the measurements of the front panels to the pattern suggestions and just knit as the pattern was written.  big mistake shannon.  i now have a sweater that is seriously like wearing two blankets wrapped around me..haha.  i mean look at all the knitting i did! wowsa!  i'm pretty proud of myself for getting it done.  i love this pattern though, and have no other complaints.  i would make it again but this time making the front sides a fair amount shorter (not so many increases) so the drape would not be so long or heavy on me.

i've found three ways to wear it and my fave is picture number 1 at the start of the post.  i'm on the hunt for a cool vintage brooch to wear it pinned like that.  i think i will get good use out of it like that.  i also wear it at home a ton.  it's very cozy and warm and overall i love the color, the yarn and the style of the sweater.  i highly recommend it as a first project.  it was a wonderful dive in to start playing with seamless knits.  i love the ability to adjust and modify the sizing as you knit.  it's super fun to be able to try it on as you go and see how it's fitting.  it's also exciting.

i will admit i had some challenges with the stockinette stitch.  i get bored easily and usually tend to lean towards patterns with more detail work - lace, cable or even just ribbing, but near the end i got into the flow and started to find how relaxing it is to work on and to be able to carry around with me and knit wherever without worrying about the pattern.  it was great!  i'm definitely hooked and will be doing it again :)

the best part about this cardigan are the memories made while making it. i will forever smile at the images of all the nights spent with laughs and good coffee while working away at it with my lovely knit night gals.  the moments spent in the sunshine at the beach with my little girls while i knitted away and the evenings i sat cozied up in half of it on the couch with the hubs while i stitched away at the other half and last, but not least, the awesomeness of our kal.  that in itself makes this sweater a success.  it's been so wonderful getting to know all of you and chatting everyday in our ravelry group.  it's been a great support system for me and i hope for all of you.  i learned a lot and got so inspired for all the knitting projects and knit alongs to come.  i hope you'll join me and we can continue to take that special time to spoil ourselves while working on a project just for us :)  there's memories to be made and yarn to be treasured.  happy knitting my dear friends!

stay tuned...next week the winners of the prizes will be announced and starting in the first week of october will be our next kal!!!  woot woot!  you ready?  are you gonna join me?  i hope so :)

*all conversations about the KAL can be found in our luvinthemommyhood ravelry group thread here.  you can find all the previous KAL posts here.   you can also friend me on ravlery.com under luvinthemommyhood.

The Autumn Tunic Tutorial - Celebrate Color!

It's time for some Celebrate Color fun!  I'm joining in on all the celebrate color excitement over on the lovely Rachel's blog - "Stitched in Color" by doing a fall inspired tunic tutorial for your wee ones today called the Autumn Tunic!  I heart this top and want one for myself too!  Have you all gotten your projects added to the linky party?  (You can add them here.)  I heart autumn and love this rich season filled with leaves and blooms left from summer.  The color palette for this tunic was inspired by Stanley Park in Vancouver, BC.  My ol'stomping grounds.  I have very vivid memories of  Mackenzie's first autumn there when we did a mini photo shoot of her romping in the leaves.  The colors still stick out in my mind and they are still, to this day, some of my favorite photographs.

It makes me get all teary eyed to look at those pics now.  A bad case of where has the time gone.....

I always have good memories of autumn.  The rain hasn't started pouring in buckets for 6 months straight, the weather is still warm enough to go without a coat/sweater (sometimes), the sun peeks it's head out and man does it feel good.  Nothing can bring me down on those days filled with crisp orange, red & yellow leaves....trees adorned with golden jewels, sitting and basking in the warm breezes, flowers still soaking up every last drop of sunshine just the same way we do.  Mackenzie and I still love to stop and stare at those yummy moments of autumn just the way we did when she was a wee one and we hope Harper will be just as enamored as we are with autumn.

So keep those parkas at bay a bit longer...pull some leggings or jeans on your wee one, pack a sweater and add an Autumn Tunic and go soak in those autumn rays...I promise it warms the soul :)

Note: This pattern fits my almost 4 1/2 year old daughter.  She is small/short for her age.  Make adjustments accordingly for your child's size/age by simply decreasing/increasing the width/length of the top pattern (taking care to leave enough room to do your box pleats across the bodice, you will need to add the width of fabric for her size to the width of fabric needed to make the box pleats), length of armhole line and size of sleeve (again, making sure to leave enough width to make your inverted box pleat).  All of these can be adjusted quite simply by resizing.  I made a pattern using freezer paper and can usually eyeball her sizing by wrapping it on her and by also using other garments that she owns for calculations to match up to the measurements of her body.  Measure a fave top of your child's to see the distance between the top of the shoulder to the armpit join or measure your child.  Lay both pieces of fabric rectangles on top of each other and mark this distance on your fabric the same as you would in Step 2 of the tutorial below.  For any other help resizing feel free to send an email my way to luvinthemommyhood@yahoo.ca, I'd be more than happy to help you out.

Materials:

- one yard fabric             - fabric marker
- coordinating thread      - pinking shears (optional)
- 2 buttons
- iron
- sewing machine
- hand sewing needle

Pattern piece for sleeve:

you can download/print the pattern piece here or simply click on the image below so it's full size and print from there.  I'm also fiddling around with using google docs for my pattern pieces now but don't trust what I did...lol...so you can find that version here if you prefer it.  *When printing do not shrink or resize the picture. Print it out as is.

Instructions:

1) Prep your fabric by pre-washing and drying. I used Buttercups by Amy Butler and I got the fabric I'm using from www.stitchsimple.com and she does all the washing & pressing for ya with unscented & chemical free detergent.  The fabric shows up all ready to go!  Seriously...best thing evah!

2) Cut out your pattern pieces for the sleeves and cut out (2) rectangles 22"W x 17"H (the top will look huge but when you put it on in the end it's almost like butterfly wings when your wee one lifts up her arms. My girl loved it!).   Lay both rectangles on top of each other.  Now we're going to use those sleeve pieces you cut out as templates to get your sleeve holes super accurate instead of doing some fussy measuring and trying to desperately draw a straight angled line..haha.  Take your sleeve pieces and match up the side of the sleeve pieces (the side should be about 7 1/4") where I've shown the dashed lines in the diagram above.  Mark this line with a fabric marker.  Move sleeve piece off and cut along the line you just drew.  Now just barely trim the top of your 2 rectangle pieces (your top - front/back) and the short end of your sleeves (this side is about 5") with pinking shears. Literally just enough to put the etches in..we don't want to lose fabric length here. Or you could choose to zig zag stitch these edges instead.  We're doing this to finish the fabric & prevent fraying for a step later on in the tutorial.

3) Take your sleeve pieces and press a 1/4" seam along the curved edge, fold 1/4" and press again.  Stitch down the hem.

4) With right sides facing each other (WS up) stitch the side seam of the sleeve (the one you used to draw the line in step 2) to the coordinating angle on the side of your top using a 1/2" seam allowance.  Press your seam and finish it with a zig zag stitch or mock overlock.  This gives your garment a nice professional finish.  It is, of course, optional and trimming with pinking shears works just as well. *Note: if you are using a serger you can skip the steps for finishing the seams all throughout the tutorial.

5) With right sides still facing (WS up) match the underarms together of your front/back pieces of top.  Pin along the side seams of your rectangles from the armpit down. Do this for both the left and right side of the top.  Sew this with a 1/2" seam allowance.  Again, press your seams and finish the seams with a zigzag stitch or mock overlock.

6) Mark with fabric pen (or use a pin) the center of both your front and back of your top.  Fold and press (2) 2" box pleats (it takes 4" of fabric to make a 2" box pleat), (this video is helpful if you've never made a box pleat before), to the right and left of your center mark.  Do this for both the front and back of your top making sure the space between the outer edge of your pleat to where the sleeves join the rectangle are equal on both sides (left to right) of the top.

7) Baste (you are going to do this to hold down the pleat when you finish the neckline to avoid shifting of the pleat) down "only" the top of the pleats with the smallest seam allowance you can.

8) With WS facing fold and press entire neckline 1/4" around the top.  Stitch this seam down and press.

9) Find and mark the center point of your sleeve.  Fold in both sides equally to make one inverted pleat (here is a great post showing inverted pleats).  Do this for both sleeves.  Press.

10) Get your 2 buttons out and hand sew your buttons on to each sleeve on the neckline between where your pleat meets up.

11) Try the garment on your child to check the length you would like to hem.  I did a very wide hem so I will have lots of room in this tunic for Mackenzie to grow.  I can take out the sleeve pleat and let down the hem as she gets bigger.  I folded and pressed 2" and then folded and pressed 2" again to equal a 4" hem.  I stitched this down the width of my presser foot in from the inside edge.  I then topstitched 1/4" away from the first row of stitching to almost the edge of the hem.  Press.

12)  Attach your label.  Press/fold your pleats (you can also blind stitch your pleats by hand down a few inches if they don't stay in place..mine were fine but this may change based on the fabric you are using) and go rock your new Autumn Tunic!!! So fun!

Do you have a fave autumn picture/memory?  Have you been doing any sewing for fall? What do you think of the tunic?  What print would you make it in?  Let's chat sewing ladies...I'm on my 2nd cup of coffee this morning (eek) and would love your company :)

TGIF! woot woot!  it's friday, it's friday!  i'm so happy it's the weekend.  i'm pooped and miss my hubby.  we're on the heel of exam time so studying is amped and he will be gone most of the weekend as well but we're going to make the most of the time we get together.

i may attempt to continue our diy project with painting the other shelf, my desk, my chair and an end table...not all this weekend though..i'm not that caffeinated..haha.  but i do need to get it done.  i also am still purging, organizing fabric and thread, rolling mini bolts and doing a serious clean.  fun right? not.

i am looking forward to though pumpkin spice lattes, lots and lots of knitting, less time with my f*&king seam ripper (damn that seam ripper), sewing that will produce 2 tutorials for you all, snuggles with my babies, cuddles with the hubby, good tv, and warm blankies :)

what are your weekend plans?  any organizing going on?  any coffee drinking..lol?  tell me your wishes...i love hearing them :)
