pattern: puerperium cardigan by kelly brooker
yarn: berroco vintage dk in colorway 2134
i promise this is the last of the baby goodies...for now..lol. a friend of mine recently had a new baby girl - scarlett. how could i resist knitting up a vibrant red sweater for a pretty, feminine, dark haired baby girl? nope...couldn't do it. red it had to be. i spent a lot of time on ravelry over the last few weeks hunting down just the right pattern for baby scarlett. as soon as i spotted the "puerperium cardigan" i knew it was the one. i loved it's simple lines, the border of cute buttons and the varying sleeve styles and lengths. it caught my eye right away.
it took me less than a week to finish this little cardi up and it was a fast and rewarding knit. i had made it a few inches in and during my sleep deprived haze i thought i had made a boo boo and ripped it out and started over only to realize i hadn't made a mistake - oops! you live and learn not to read patterns that take a bit of concentration when overtired or distracted.
i also couldn't resist whipping up another pair of rae's "basic newborn baby pant". seriously you guys, these things are so cute and they are super fast to sew. i think i got this pair done in 15mins! so quick. i added an extra 1/2" to the pattern this time round so scarlett might be able to wear them for a few weeks longer.
a pretty little outfit for a pretty little girl :)
i also made my friend a key holder thingie...i know some people call them key fob holders but she doesn't have a key fob...so let's just call it thingie..lol. i have one that the lovely laura from "on the laundry line" sent me and i LOVE it. my friend spotted it and asked me if i could make one for her too. super fun and easy to make! this is a great project for beginners to practice your top stitching skills. i couldn't find a tutorial that i liked so i just winged it. if anyone's interested in one let me know and i could put one together for you all.
i also have a little treat for you ladies! i tweeted a few weeks ago asking for some recommendations for wool wash to help my handknits not stink so bad anymore. i was finding that everytime i blocked something whoooeeeee...stinky! nasty odor. one of the first tweets i got back was from amanda of the fabulous blog "hey pork chop" (check it out - i'm an addicted reader) recommending "soak".
i went right away to check out their site and found myself really excited to find a creative array of products but also that they are canadian! woot woot! go canada.....i digress :P they so sweetly sent me some samples to try out and i've used soak on 3 projects now and man is it great stuff. my knitted items smell better, block good and are way softer than they started. i'm a very happy knitter! and because soak wash is so fabulous they are giving all you awesome luvinthemommyhood readers a 10% discount using the code "LMH10" good till november 28th, 2011! wow..thanks soak!
i know i'll be ordering at least one bottle. they carry everything from heel cream, awesome temporary knitting tattoos, labels for your handknits, basins & soak in seven fun scents! soak is perfect for use with any fine fibers from your knitting to your lingerie. i'm going to be ordering some of "unleash" which is inspired by ravelry. fun! their website also has some great tips for blocking as well as videos to help on their youtube channel. find all things soak here:
so happy soaking and happy halloween! i hope you all have a wonderful, fun-filled and safe halloween! i've got a princess and a cute piggie just dying to trick or treat! have you used soak before? what do you use when you wash your handknits? what do you think of my baby goodies? you likey? what did you work on this weekend? let's chit chat :)

loooove it! and what perfect timing for the soak discount! i've been looking for a wool wash type thing! thanks!!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteOh man, that looks great. And also, YAY CANADIANS! I love it when we do cool stuff.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of cool stuff, gorgeous sweater!! Seriously, that is adorable - I love the button border on it! I also love that it's red - so often with baby stuff you are painted so narrowly into the "pink"or "blue" camps...I remember loving red on my little girl and being totally unable to find any. Lovely job!
As for me, I finally finished the mermaid (wahoo!) and Ani is READY for Halloween. Fun stuff!!! Now back to my cowl...wait, where was I??
That red sweater is so amazing!!! I seriously teared up thinking that you made that for a friend's sweet baby. My goal for next year is to learn how to knit and your blog is SO inspiring! Thanks for all the work you put into it.
ReplyDeleteI use fancy schmancy delicates soap that my bougie sister bought me from The Laundress.
ReplyDeleteIt's much colder than I was hoping it would be for trick-or treating, but my kids are going as a pirate and Yoda so hopefully a run around the block won't leave them too chilly.
The sweater reminds me of the first sweater I made for Ellie...could never tire of seeing all those little baby things, especially such pretty colors and fabrics. They are so fun to make and "ooooh, aaah" at.
Hope you have a great Halloween, and that the sugar magically dissolves without taking any effect on those toddler bodies (at least that's what I'm hoping for over here!)
LOVE the sweater! Seriously, love it ... I clicked on the Rav link and immediately added it to my faves, so thanks! And the color is amazing, what lucky gals your friends are!
ReplyDeleteI crocheted a quick kitty-ear headband (it was so ghetto, haha) and knit up an i-cord tail on Sat morning b/c my youngest wanted to be a kitty for ballet class, it worked out pretty awesomely! Then we came home and I spent the next several hours trying to crochet an owl hat for a birthday party that afternoon! Now I have to bring a fruit plate to my 5 yr old's kindergarten Halloween party ...
That is so beautiful! I love the whole outfit! I tried to crochet my youngest a sweater last year and it ended up teenie...I think maybe a barbie could have worn it! Oh well, try try again!
ReplyDeleteOoh. Sounds yummy! Since you've tried them out, which of the scents would you recommend? Or would the travel pack be good to start out? Hubby ever so sweetly bought me some Eucalan from the LYS near his work, but I'm not too fond of the scent. I've actually got a backup of stuff to block because I'm wary of diving in with a scent I don't like lingering around the house.
ReplyDelete@ Michelle - I've only tried our Lacey which is very soft and not a strong smell at all. I think that would be your best bet besides "unscented" which they also have as well.
ReplyDelete@Cerise - Don't give up. You'll get the hang of it :)
@fionafae - Wowsa! YOu have been a busy momma! Sounds fabulous! Thanks for my exclamation marks...wink wink :)
@Hannah - we're hoping the same things here. It looks like it may rain and we are just hoping it doesn't. I hope we all make it through without sore tummies and teeth as well :)
Pintucks - Your mermaid turned out fabulous!
Thanks for all the kind words you guys. I'm glad you all liked it!
I love the puerperium! My babe is wearing hers all the time...I think it's about time for one in red.
ReplyDeleteI saw Soak in Tofino but resisted buying any at the time - thanks for the review. I'm off to check out their site!
oh my gosh, shannon, that is the cutest little gift ever!!!! how totally sweet of you, and the hours of work you put into it. yay!
ReplyDeleteI love the gorgeous jewel-toned baby outfit, and I LOVE breaking the boring pastels tradition for new baby gifts. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteFunny. I have a sample size of Soak that I haven't used yet. Will do now!
That sweater is so sweet! love it love it love it
ReplyDeleteHa! I am working on this cardi right now :-)
ReplyDeleteOh, don't you just love that baby sweater pattern? I've made two of those (actually, it's what I tried before making myself a sweater for the summer sweater knit-along!), and I have NOT been disappointed. It's an easy and quick knit with great results! Yours turned out so darling! Yay!
ReplyDeleteVery cute sweater! All of these blogs are giving me the desire to learn to knit. I picked up needles and yard this weekend.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous baby set Shannon! That is one lucky baby! :)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely LOVE Soak, I'm so tempted to get a bottle of the newest scent...and with the holidays around the corner, what a perfect time for a discount! Thanks!
What a beautiful baby gift! I love the bright red and LOVE the pants that go with it. I think it's fun to see babies in bright colors rather than traditional pastels.
ReplyDeleteThat is one seriously cute outfit!
ReplyDeleteI meant to comment on this the day you posted it but life with my new babe and toddler got in the way ;) Thank you so very much for this lovely, cute gift for Miss. Scarlett. She looks adorable in it (must send you the photos still) and we have already had comments on the outfit, the pants pairs up nicely with most of her other clothing items in her drawer. It means a lot that this sweet gift was made especially for our little one by you. I know how much you love making handmade creations and we are so very lucky to have something of yours in our home. And I LOVE the key thingie - its has eased the stress of searching endlessly in my bag of no return. Thanks friend :)
