we had a barbie marathon in our house yesterday. the house was out, the car, the clothes galore and as we were playing with our dolls i had so many flashbacks to when i played barbies. each time i pulled out another outfit i remembered how much i had treasured each one. why? because most of my barbies rockin' outfits were handmade by my mom and my nana. lovingly stitched, knitted and crocheted to up the style factor for my barbies.

do you have handmade outfits for your barbies that you adore? do you have fun dressing them up with your kids? c'mon...fess up....i'm not alone am i?????

haha this is awesome! what a wardrobe. i found myself a little jealous of her outfits going through these pics ;) she's such a fashionista! thanks to handmade. love it!
ReplyDelete:) :) :) That track suit really is ROCKIN'!!!
ReplyDeleteMy grandma made clothes for my barbie with tiny velcro and a tiny zipper. I remember a skirt for her with tiny elastic, it was too small to fit over her hips, I always had to put it on over her head. But it was denim. The most I can manage that moment is one Popover dress (free pattern on Oliver + S) for my American Doll (yes I have one) for display in my shop. Was really proud of that though. Oh and LOVE the crocheted/knitted bathing suit.
ReplyDeleteI am beyond excited for Barbie, Elsa is still a little young. I wasn't allowed to have Barbie's when I was a girl so I will get to make the clothes & I will definitely do the whole posed photo shoot when we get to that point!
ReplyDeletesooo funny!!! I never had handmade outfits for Barbie - but I certainly remember putting on fashion shows with her - dressing her up in every outfit we had that I loved and walking her down the catwalk! Lol
ReplyDeleteThose are some rocking outfits you had, some of them I would actually wear!!!
My mom and granny used to make our barbie clothes too. In fact that was the first thing I sewed. Of course ours weren't quite as glamorous as yours. They were more the "homemade" version rather than "handmade" but my mom still has them for my daughter to play with at her house.
ReplyDeleteI used to love my Barbies as a girl. Being a mom of boys now though, I'm not doing much Barbie-ing these days. Lots of superheroes, though!
ReplyDeleteI loved playing barbies with my "sissie" lol, one of my fondest memories:)have fun:)
ReplyDeletep.s.
ReplyDeleteI totally remember that gold and orange dress one of my favs too :)ahhh memories:)
Those outfits are AMAZING. Inspires me to want to make some little clothes myself!
ReplyDeletebarbie clothes and accessories were the first things i learned to sew when i was very young... let's just say that barbie's horse had a LOT of rectangular saddle blankets...
ReplyDeletei recognize that blue w\ white polka dotted halter top and skirt - that's from California Barbie!
Oh my gosh!! you have the peaches and cream dress! That was my fave! I loved my barbies growing up. My mom thought I had weird issues because they lay in my toy box naked all the time, guess I got bored in the middle of wardrobe change, or maybe I liked I fresh canvas to dress, who knows! lol. sorry if thats an overshare?!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I loved craft bazaar clothes for my barbies. I had this one crocheted number that was a full body set of footie pjs, complete with tiny little buttons at the neck like. But someone decided that wasn't fancy enough, so they also put in a little trap door for Barbie to do her business at night, and these strange, elven feet with pompoms at the end. Good times.
ReplyDeleteOh my this post made my heart happy. All the memories I have from childhood playing with Barbies just came flooding back :) I had a few hand made pieces for Barbie & some that were my Mom's so if I have a girl one day I will have to get them from her :)
ReplyDeleteWhen my sister and I were small, we were very poor. Single mom in a time when women's earning power was very low, and before the day of entitlements, WIC, food stamps, child care credits, etc. I think my father paid Ten dollars a month in child support. I'm a couple of generations older than you, and Barbie was brand spanking new. Anyway, one Christmas, after working all day and doing all the things single moms had to do, Mom sewed teensy tiny Barbie clothes after we went to bed. So, even though we were very poor and should have had a dismal Christmas, we had the best Christmas of all of our friends. They were so jealous because they all got a couple of store bought outfits, and I got a dozen or more-all originals. I still have them, although they haven't survived as well as yours since they have been well loved by a bunch of grandkids.
ReplyDeleteI was grown before I truly appreciated the value of that gift, but luckily, I did understand in time.
those clothes would have made playing with Barbie so much fun!
ReplyDeleteWow that's quite the wardrobe you and Barbie had. Lucky girl ;)
ReplyDeleteEarlier this week I just found a whole book on Barbie & doll patterns at the Thrift store! Thanks for the inspiration!
I spent hours playing Barbie. Huge elaborate days with my neighbor, too. I kept all the handmade items for my daughter. A couple of velvet dresses and a lace wedding ensemble. She has been playing with them the last few days. Maybe I should do my own Barbie photo shoot!
ReplyDeleteOh my, you guys rock! So happy you all have just as fond of memories of Barbie as I do. Here's to Barbie and handmade! I hope these snazzy outfits stick around long enough for my girl's kids to enjoy :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of your comments they made my day :)
P.s. anyone who, like Rachel above, wants to photoshoot their barbie's in wardrobe action pls let me know so I can come check them out! So fun!
this all bring a tear (actually buckets full) to my eyes. i had a barbie and sindy and rooms to go with, wardrobe full of bought and handmade clothes, mostly which a friend and i used to make. we used to go down to the local haberdashery and buy a strand of sequins or teeny buttons to sew onto capes, dresses etc made from left over fabric from mums.
ReplyDeleteanyways when it was time to put my barbies away to save them for,,,what would be today with my little girl! i put them all away in a a zippered bag and in the shed. time later when i went in there and was rummagging about for something else i noticed that the bag was all holed up...A little mama mouse had made a nest in my barbie bag full of clothes and now it was full of mouse sh.t and all chewed up, so the whole bag went straight in the bin! i am sooo :-(((.
so please shannon enjoy a day just for me, pour me a cofe and pretend me and my little one are there to share with you are your girls!

Scene: Twilight. Barbie her hair lovingly shorn and dyed with pink marker steals off to rendevous with He-Man. Doesn't matter that he only comes up to her chin, true love has no limitations!
ReplyDeleteI loved my Barbies and I made them some clothes myself but they were like knitted tube dresses or tiny scarves, not much more than that. I love to make tiny clothes now for the girls' dolls and stuffies. No Barbies in the house...yet.
When I was little I used to make clothes for Barbie myself out of aluminum foil. Its very shiny and it molds easily to fit her body! Anyway, I think that was my entrance into clothing design!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has some Barbies but she's not really into them :(
ReplyDeleteI looooooved Barbie. Sewing clothes for Barbie was how I learned how to sew. She's surprisingly easy to sew for. She looks fab in anything and she never complains.
No, you're soo not alone! I love Barbies and their clothes, always have, always will. The clothes you have for yours are so adorable!
ReplyDeleteOk so I'll admit a few things here. One I played with Barbies, two I'm not a big Barbie fan anymore, but three my girls do have one Barbie and recently we brought out a box of furniture and assecories from the garage. All things I used to play with and it did bring back memories. The kids have been having a great time. Alas most clothing was for Skipper so they wouldn't fit our Barbie. Though one knitted dress did. The girls were thrilled. Wish we had found some rocken clothing like yours. Where can I find that green dress at the bottom in my size?????
ReplyDeleteJust remember that this blog http://www.craftinessisnotoptional.com
ReplyDeletehas tutorials on making handmade barbie clothing. Attilio they can't take the place of your old creations but perhaps they can help you make some new memories with your little girl.
There is a plus-sized pattern in an issue of Burda Style Magazine from last year (June or July '10) for a top EXACTLY, and I do mean EXACTLY like the bodice portion of the assymetrical lavender number. What goes around, comes around.
ReplyDeleteI just happened to stumble upon your blog and THIS IS THE COOLEST POST EVER!!! I just love love love all the handmade barbie outfits. I LOVE THEM!!!!! OMG! sorry about the capital letters but I CANT STAND IT CUZ THEY ARE SO CUTE!!!!!
