Knitting 911 - Summer Sweater Knit Along!!

we've got a winner and we've got a new summer project to do together! i've chosen the "effortless cardigan by hannah fettig" for my summer sweater. knitting isn't just for the winter ladies! we can knit all year round! in fact this weekend i was just at the beach in the sunshine knitting away on my legwarmers. who says we have to put our sticks away cause the sun is out? knitting is an all year past time in our house. it's easily transportable, it's fun, relaxing, soothing, and stress relieving...all things a mother on the go needs.

reader gynnab suggested we do a knit a long together on last week's post where you all so graciously helped me decided which sweater to whip up this summer. i got super excited and after chatting with some of you we all decided a knit along would be the perfect project for this summer! everyone can pick the sweater of their choice that's the most flattering for your body type and we'll all knit them together...virtually of course :) let's all spread the love of knitting through any season and make some summer sweaters together. the perfect cardi or pullover can be the perfect touch for a stroll on the beach or lounging in the backyard for a bbq. throw it on with shorts, a skirt or as a wrap over your summer dress.

i'll be putting together some info on the KAL and get things ready for us all to join in. i wanted to give you all a heads up so you can choose your sweater pattern and get your yarn stash ready and i also wanted to get your feedback on when you would like to start the KAL. i was thinking mid june?? what do you ladies think? is that enough time to get yarn and get patterns ready? i'll whip up some fun buttons for us to sport on our blogs (if you have one) and the KAL will take place in our luvinthemommyhood ravelry group.

what pattern are you planning on making for the KAL? do you have any suggestions you'd like to see included for the KAL? what date do you prefer as a start date? happy knitting ladies! i'm so excited to make my very first sweater! it's about time....14 years or so is a long time to wait..haha.

  1. Oh I want to make this cardigan too! It's been on my list for a while. Now, whether to join the KAL or finish the mountain of WIP's in my knitting basket...?

  4. I am tryig to decide on a pattern. I am leaning toward Vitamin D. I really like the Effortless Cardigan, but when browsing Ravelry I wasn't sure I liked the length of the front sides. So, I think Vitamin D it is.

  5. I've been crocheting for a while, but have never made a whole garment, so your post really struck a chord with me. Maybe I'll just sit in the back and join in quietly ;) I've been wanting to make the Orchid Top that's been in my queue for a while, so this should be a good chance to get going on that. :)

  7. Mid June sounds fine to me too, I may have to do double duty with my current project but what's new? Question is will there be a timeline...ie Mid June to Mid September or will it just be until YOU finish yours? I think 4-6 months is a reasonable time limit for a KAL.

Other question, were you thinking of having prizes/giveaways for those who finish? I'd be willing to contribute to any prizes should you go that route.

  8. So I've been trying to leave a comment since yesterday, and Blogger just would not let me sign in....how frustrating.
Anyway! I am in. I've never done a KAL, but have wanted to for a while, and this is perfect!! I had the effortless on my list of things to knit for a while, so why not start with it? And a button is a fabulous idea. Can't wait for more details!

  9. I'm in. I think I'm going to make the Solstice Cardigan so that I have it ready once the cooler weather hits. Just have to decide what yarn. I was given yarn money for graduation and would like to get something better than the Knit Picks WotA I was considering. Any suggestions?

  10. I'm actually going to say I'm in. I have a pattern for the oatmeal pullover and really, really, really want to make it. Even though I've never used dpns or circular needles yet, I feel ready to tackle this project!

  11. yay! so excited you guys are going to jump in too! I'm doing something new too elbie! we can all try something new together!

Teri - Choosing yarns is not my strong suit. I like to go to the ravelry pattern and see what yarns are suggested and also I click on the tab at the top of the pattern that says "yarn ideas" and then you can see what others used and what they looked like and then of course, price plays a factor for me too.

Does anyone have any suggestions for Teri?

Buffy - i think that sounds about right. A few months at least. That sweater is very pretty my dear and no way am I talking you out of it, you're gonna rock that!!!

  13. I think that I'm going to join too, but I might start a little early. I'm heading out on a 7+ hour road trip to my Mom's on Friday and then all the way back a week later. I should be able to get some good knitting in. I have NEVER done anything like this...only a few longies and covers, but I love the sweater and am going to give it a go if I can get organized before my trip. Downloaded the pattern tonight and will try to get to the yarn store tomorrow. Will be fun to watch what everyone does. Thanks!

PS: Do you know if the chest measurement in the Effortless Cardigan pattern is across the bust or under (over?) the bust. I guess maybe if it was across the bust it would be called the "bust" measurement. A first-timer...can you tell ;-)

  14. @Lindsay Lindsay - You know what...I think I would have measured over my chest (or the girls) as you want the sweater to be able to wrap across and that may be the largest measurement (in my case). I haven't got my pattern yet but I think that is what I would do. And don't feel bad about your question..it's a good one. I'm just sorry I'm not 100% on the answer. This is my first adult sized sweater too :) We're doing this together girl! Have fun knitting and just join in when you are back, no worries.

Thanks for your reply! I've got my yarn and needles packed, so hopefully the kiddies won't need too much attention while we're driving and I can get a good start on the cardigan.

Please leave a comment, I LOVE hearing from you!

Most of the time I try really hard to respond to comments right in the comments section, I find it more fun and that way other people can join in on the conversation. If you would like for me to write you back instead, just leave your email addy (blogger doesn't always give it to me) and I'll send you a hello!
