quilting 911 - my tired eyes

the quilt top piecing is done! woot woot! i did it! i know...it's not a hard pattern, but hey, i'm a newbie and anything that isn't royally screwed up is a success in my books! i had a very hard time deciding where to put each print and at one point had to put it away for a few days so i could look at it with a fresh opinion. after taking lots of pics of lots of patterns this was the way i decided to go. whatcha think? you like? i hope so...cause i ain't taking it a apart..haha.

what i am stumped on now is the backing and the bias. i loved everyones suggestions for the turquoise/red combo. i think that would be so adorable. what i'm having a hard time with is actually finding a print i like for the backing..ok...and for the trim. yikes! maybe it's my sleep deprived self but i'm just not finding the right fit. nothing is jumping out at me. i'm also coming up empty handed for a home dec weight that's modern with turquoise in it for reupholstering my new chair. you guys gotta help a girl out :) they are all blending together in my mind.

should i use something from the same "it's a hoot" line for the rest of the quilt? what about one of these?

so here's my questions for today's 911:

- would you do red bias and turquoise backing or vice versa?
- seen any great prints you think would go fabulously?
- have you seen a modern home dec weight with turquoise in it you think i would love for my sewing chair?

you guys would be saving me. i seriously was online for a long time last night trying to find something and just kept coming up empty handed. i think i've decided to try quilting in the boxes individually and i'm excited to get it going but i need my backing fabric first.

where is your fave go to place to look for new fabric? do you have a fave fabric shop online? share your thoughts.

  1. I love love love your quilt! Great job! So playful!
(and I might have to paint my sewing room the same colour as yours - gorgeous)
I would love to see a turquoise binding on your quilt (the 3 pink tree-like prints - do they come in turquoise also?)
I too am crazy about turquoise and red right now.
If you check the fabric I just recently used for a project posted on my blog it might work? It doesn't have the whites but has little birds, pinks, blues, etc.
The coordinating pink fabric I used comes in other colours as well.

Let me know if you think it might work and I'll find out the line for you :)

  2. Thanks Jo. Harper loves it! When she sees it her eyes light up and she grins ear to ear so I'm happy with it.
I love the fabric you used with the birds etc on it and would love to know what is for a diff project but for some strange reason I keep thinking something soothing and minimal for the quilt back as I feel like the front has so much pizazz :)

  3. For your chair:

(And scroll down that page to see the coordinates! Gah!)

On the quilt front, I like the idea of the red back with turquoise binding! But I'm a nut for red, and have yet to make a quilt :)

It looks beautiful so far! :D

  4. I love the simplicity of the quilt. The fabrics really pop from it. Sometimes it's hard to see the fabric as a whole with really small pieces. I would do torquoise binding and red binding to make the quilt "pop". I love popping quilts!

  5. @Sarah Ohhh, love all those prints you linked! Definitely on the list - thank you!
I agree..I'm leaning towards the turqoise on the binding and red on the back. I'm starting to think the turqoise might be too light. Aiayaya, decisions, decisions..haha.

  6. Good, I'm glad you like them! Those turquoise giraffes have been hanging out in my shopping cart for a while now :) I'm thinking they want to be a MADE Rollie Pollie :) Right?!

The quilt's going to be fantastic whichever direction you decide to go! It's already sooo precious!

  7. @Sarah Oh ya, those giraffe's would make a fab rollie pollie.
I love the Dwell Home Dec line but the colors are just not right :( Ty Pennington's new line and Anna Maria Horner's line I love but they also don't match right...arghh.

  8. Oh, how I swooOOOoon over the Dwell line...
I think I need to stop talking to you - my wallet's giving me the eye.

    :D

I'll keep on the look-out for turquoisey goodness for ya'!

  9. What a cute quilt! I definitely think a turquoise binding would be best. I would use a striped turquoise fabric cut on the bias, then you have a yummy diagonal stripe on your binding, so cute!

  10. Okay! I have it (the fabric for your other project) is Nest by Valori Wells for Free Spirit, Westminster Fibers #VW30 Paisley
Can't wait to see it :)

  11. I think using a fabric that's already in the quilt front is the best way to go. At least that's what I always do. It helps pull it all together - cohesion :)
I would also do a red backing, and then turquoise binding. In my opinion, the turquoise would look really cute against the front (but subtle enough), but then it would POP when viewed from the back.

  12. yay, go team Newbie Quilters! No suggestions for you, sorry.
I definitely rushed with my chenille blanket when it came to picking a fabric for the binding, I was getting antsy to just git'er done and used something I had on hand. When I get back to her quilt-quilt I'm definitely spending more time agonizing over it. Worth the extra time/effort/cost when you've poured so much of yourself into the project!

  13. Hi! The quilt looks great! Have you checked out the Giddy line? I can't tell from the pictures if the colors will match up, but that line has tons of turquoise and reds and pinks. I always like a subtle print or solid for backing when I have such a busy top. And I love the plaid or stripes from Giddy for the binding - I lean towards geometrics on the binding. I def agree with red on the back and turq on the binding. Beautiful!

  14. first of all, it is adorable! love the colors, pattern and all the fabrics you used. now, would i totally throw you for a loop if i suggested that you make the bias trim out of yellow or that mustard color? :) im picturing some little polka dots in mustard for the trim and then a turqouise stripe for the backing:)hope that helps. i just got a nice big fabric order from the ups man today. oh how i love seeing that brown truck pull up to the house.

  15. The quilt looks really great! I'm going to go against the flow here and say that I think a red binding would be the way to go. I think the thin line of red all the way around would serve to contain the excitement of the quilt.

  16. oh
    my
    gosh

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I would totally buy it! What fabric line is it? I apparently missed where you talked about it before (because from this post it certainly sounds like you've talked about it before). Personally I'd go with binding in the white with turquoise print thats already in the quilt front and then back it either in solid white or turquoise (or I suppose pink, but personally I'm not a fan of the color so it's not something I'd do per say). But then again I like solid colored quilt backs.

  17. @Courtney Thanks so much! The line is called "It's a Hoot" by MoMo for Moda. Here's the link to the other post http://www.luvinthemommyhood.com/2011/01/quilting-911-i-need-help-martha.html

I'm so torn right now. I'm still not sure which way to go. It's the gemini in me :P

  18. Julie - I have heard that too. That was my first inclination but then I felt like it would be too much in a weird way? Does that make sense?

Beth - Thanks for the suggestion. Cute line! It's so hard to tell if the colors will match up. The red in the quilt is more of a rasberry tone so I'm a bit hesitant. I loved the strip with the turqouise and red together..pretty.

Christina - Hmmmmm, yellow...that would be cute too..hahaha, oh no, another good option. What's a girl to do ladies? I am also feeling jealous of your delivery my dear...whatcha making? I'll be right over for you to show me. We can roll around in it :P

katie - Good point too. This is soooo tough.

  19. I just happened to look at Moda Bake Shop and last Sunday's recipe uses It's A Hoot for a baby blanket. It looks like they backed it with Marshmallow 32370 15 and bound it with Pistachio 32378 17- 1/2 yd. Just in case you wanted more choices!

  21. Your quilt is cute! And pat on the back to you for a fabulous first quilt top. I absolutely love the It's A Hoot line. I like the turquoise binding idea too. One of my favorite online shops is Fabric Shack. They have half price shipping. You could do a fabric search through several different online shops at quiltshops.com or quiltropolis.net. There are several great shops out there.

  22. hee hee, just had to throw something else in there:) have you checked out any of nate berkus's fabrics? i saw a few that i loved, but not sure the color chioces. the fabs i got are for the shop. i was in need of some boyish fabs. i think i bought all of robert k's that matched. super cute. cant see what you choose!

  23. I am in love. I am just a newbie at sewing and may take on this task.. Just googled the line you used and love them all.

    Thanks for sharing!!

  24. Hi, I love the quilt! I am not an avid sewer, however, all the quilts that I had as a kid (and the one that I made for one of my boys) always had flannel on the back for that extra comfort factor. I know that you are in BC where the climate is more temperate than Newfoundland, but we would sleep under them in the winter and on top of them in the summer(on those 2 or 3 really hot days!LOL)

On another note, I just discovered your blog a couple of days ago... I stayed up until 3am reading, oooh-ing and awe-ing! Keep up the great work - your blog has wanted me to go and dig out my cheap little sewing machine and make something! I am a knitter, a traditional rug hooker, cake decorator, cross-stitcher and a one-time quilt maker... so what is one more craft obsession, hey?

  28. Hi,
    Love your quilt. :-)
How about something from the Moda City Weekend line (google it. fabric.com has some selections)? In particular: maybe Turquoise Park Ramble for the backing, and the Roundabout Dot fabric (in your color preference) for the binding? The Park Ramble is mostly turquoise/red but it has the barest pink flower accent which might tie in very nicely with your quilt top? Good luck and have fun..

  29. Sparrak - Aww, glad you liked it! The line is even lovelier in person :) You should give it a go, it wasn't too hard.

Maddy - I thought about flannel for the back but it's more expensive and I'm trying to keep the cost down. I'm picky about my flannel..haha, so it costs a lot when I get it.

Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm so happy you liked the site and wow, 3am! You made my day!

    Rebecca - Thanks hun :)

Sophie - Love both of those, thanks for the great suggestions! Added them to the list.

Merry Mama - Ohh, forget about that line. I love that series and you're right the dots would be fabulous! Adding them to the list too.

  32. Oh CUTE!! This is totally awesome. I love that you're using It's a hoot for your girl and I just bought a bunch for my boy.

Anyway, binding: DUDE, you need to just do this cheater bindof: http://www.made-by-rae.com/2010/10/rae-pretends-she-can-quilt-and-shares.html.
(shameless self promotion). The only problem is that it makes your backing and binding the same color, but if you can get over that it will make your life so so easy. Seriously :)

  33. Love it! This is such a great line. Even though you used a simple pattern, it looks more complex because of all those stripes in some of the prints. Anyways, I'm a big fan of making scrappy backings. Have you checked out http://www.filminthefridge.com/ yet? She always comes up with some awesome backings.
And as far as online fabric shops go - Hawthorne Threads is the BEST!

  34. it's probably too late for my two bob, but I reckon the red bias with turquoise would be lovely. And by trim do you mean sashing? I don't think it needs it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Here's my two cents, I would back it with the Plaid print in Sky and bind it with the Eggs print in Pistachio. I love the front, your doing great!

  36. I did a quilt in red/pink/turquoise for my daughters room and I backed it with red minky and a turqoise polka dot binding. It's lovely - and the minky is so soft.
