school time is almost here...and my oldest daughter is about to start preschool. she's also a big snack lover. yummmm, snacks! what to do with all those snacks? dried fruit mix? a little juice? maybe some cheese? oh, and we can't forget some crackers..oops...those got eaten before we could snap the photo.

why not whip up some super easy and fun to make reusable snack bags? no velcro, no zippers, no loops or buttons. just simple envelope style with some fun fabric. easy for toddlers to open, easy to clean, no chemicals...just cuteness.

i meant to make 1. i made 5 or 6 - that's how addicting they are. i also plan to make a whole bunch more. little hands love them too. fun to watch mom make and fun to play with and store all those yummy goodies they adore. wanna make some of your own? click here for the video tutorial from amy karol of "the angry chicken".

my snack bag tutorial was made from some leftovers of a project that i still have to post and haven't had time to do yet...soon, soon. but i did get to a local store (the cloth castle) here in victoria to pick up some yummy new fabric to add to my stash and to my "must make" list. it's long. huge. it just keeps growing and i don't know how to contain my little gremlin. i don't feed it after midnight, and i don't get them wet but dang...it's still growing. that list is HUGE (dusty - i added about 20 things to mine - help)!

sorry, i couldn't help myself. it's late, i'm tired. that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it. i also just love me some gremlin's. and yes, as my hubby likes to remind me, i'm so old that i remember when gremlins are cool (i still think they are, i even had one).
moving right along, here are my new fabrics.........

let's hope i actually get the time to make the projects i have planned for them. don't worry, i'll be posting some goodies for you along the way. my sewing machine actually didn't call out crying for me in the night the last 2 days because...insert drum roll please...i actually got to sew!!!! it's a miracle!!! i got the snack bags above done (when i was supposed to be making something for the site) and i'm almost done a little quilting project that is a gift so i can't post it here yet.
what have you all been making? any new projects on your to make list? what do you do to find time to sew with a busy schedule? late night or early morning? nap time or bedtime? let's chat :)

i try to spend some quality time with my sewing machine in the evenings... i'm a total night owl. Getting up at 5am for work has curbed my nightowl nature a litle, but i'm still most creative at night. a least once every couple of weeks i try to get together with my sewing buddy - she hauls her machine and suitcase of fabrics and supplies to my house and I in-turn give her a place to set up and sew... and then we giggle about boys and clothes ;-) some things just never change :D
ReplyDeleteI just bought a ton of new fabrics too! I will be making some dish cloths for one of my customers and more bibs. I wish I had the time to sew for fun and not just fill orders. On the top of my list is a tool belt for the kiddo's. My son has been begging me for me. I sew when the kids are sleeping. And I always watch t.v while sewing. Last night, yes, I watched Bachelor Pad. I like the Bachelor and the Bachelorette much better, but I still watch it. Tonight I will be watching Project Runway via Netflix. Love the snack bags! And Im so jealous you have a fabric store in your town.
ReplyDeleteCurrently I'm trying to finish up a backpack (Made By Rae's Pattern) for my son to start school with. Kindergarten tomorrow! I'm also hoping to make him a Tie T-Shirt too.
ReplyDeleteWhen do I sew? Um, whenever I can fit it in. I have a lovely husband who lets me sew at night when he's home. At nap time I'll put a movie on for the older kiddos and sew. Some days I just put it on my to-do list and sit the baby on my lap and go for it!
it's all about nap time on the weekends- or letting my little guy go crazy with my fabric drawers and button collection while I cut, meausre and iron my fabric. There might be a little bit (okay a BIG) mess to clean up later but having that time together in the crafting/creative space is pretty fun too.
ReplyDeletelove the snack bags! Those are just too fun not to make. And your new fabrics, just makes me want to buy MORE! ahhhh!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only late night sewer...and I mean late night. Lately though I've been trying to keep our afternoon craft time going but with me sewing and my daughter doing her own craft. It's fun and she seems to enjoy it. It's a good thing when that coincides with baby's naptime, but if not, I'm with you on the baby on the lap and sew thing. i put her in my sling and away I go. I'll do what it takes at this point..hahaha.
ReplyDeleteAnd Vanessa - you should see the mess after we're done, it's scary.
I'm also trying to get a backpack done, but from Inditutes free pattern.
As for the bachelor pad, I too am not loving it. I'm getting bored of it to tell you the truth. Project runway is awesome this season. I also just found a facebook page of Tim Gunn's where he does video clips (on his own) of the episdoes and he is brutally honest - it's hilarious! You can find it here. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/TimGunn
Ninja - I need a sewing buddy like that :)
I'm partway through a quilt I have a taggie blanket that I need to get to ASAP and, well, you saw my list.... oh and I think I added a few things, too! I tend to sew after bedtime and sometimes during naps or I drag the kids downstairs with me.
ReplyDeleteI am so making some of those snack bags tonight! Thanks for the inspiration! I've been putting off making bags because of the velcro. These will be perfect. And your new fabrics... yummy!
ReplyDeleteSnack bags have been on my to-do list for about 6-months now - don't know why I can't get it together and sit down and make some. Hmmmmm, I was planning on doing some with velcro, but I may have to re-evaluate the plan.
ReplyDeleteI try to get some sewing in during the day when the girls are playing together and then the rest is done mostly on weekends and some nights. Some nights are more productive than other......depends on if I have had my glass of red wine or not....LOL!
Beautiful fabrics - I just love, love fabric...as if you couldn't tell :-)

OK…you’ve convinced me…I saw Amy’s clever snack bags and thought I should make some…and then never got around to it. Yours are super cute. I have been missing the creative side of my life and I need to get re-energized. My poor little shop is looking empty and my sewing machine is collecting dust. Sigh. My Dad bought me a serger a year (!) ago on craigslist and I finally got around to taking it get inspected/cleaned. I’ve promised myself I will take a serger 101 class so I will not be intimidated anymore. Finding time to sew is always a challenge. My kiddos are seven and four now, so they can play on their own while I sew, but lugging out the machine, threading it…whine, whine, whine. I just need to suck it up, huh?
ReplyDeleteProjects on the to-do list: Amy’s snack bags, Sugar City Journal’s Village Frock, Make It Perfect’s Sprout Dress, Uniform Studio’s Wrap Jacket and Martha Stewart’s Menswear Bunnies…
ooh, your new fabrics are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteuGGG i SO Wanna make these(in my whinyest voice) I could make them but never get to use them but once. I have too many pets. Our house could be a weaver paridise. I have a Malamute #1 and 5 more various dogs to go with her. So the hair situation is uncontrollable. Give me a break they are all rescue dogs. Maybe someday!! but until then I will whine!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you found some time to sew! That feels good. This is totally unrelated, but I've just been meaning to tell you that we went to Victoria for our honeymoon - it's SO beautiful! We want to come back in the next year or two... so then we can meet for tea :) haha.
ReplyDeleteLovely fabrics. If they were mine then they'd be sitting in my stash for years...
ReplyDeleteBit hard to sew during the day at the moment. I try to sew in the evenings when the kiddies are in bed but sometimes I'm so exhausted that I just flop on the couch. But I really really want to make some new skirts for spring/summer... bring on the sunshine!

Awww, I had a Gizmo plushie when I was younger (although the Gremlins scared the crap out of me and I wouldn't go near a swimming pool when the movie came out).
ReplyDeleteI usually try to sew at night, too, but lately I've been beat. To make up for it, I've been crocheting like a made woman, but I really need to get to finishing up my practical sewing and mending so that I can get to fun things, like making my son some pants.
very cute:)
ReplyDeleteHello! I love your blog it is so inspiring, I'm trying hard to get followers on my blog, do you have any suggestions on how to get the word out?
ReplyDeletethank you
I just found your blog through sew! mama! Sew! and I've had so much fun looking around. and then something caught my eye "The Cloth Castle". In 1997 and 1998(wow that sounds like a really long time ago...am I really that old?, no I can't be.) I lived in Victoria and worked at that evil(and by evil I mean fabulous)place. When I moved back home to Southern Alberta (after only a year) I brought home with me 10 large boxes of things I had sewn and fabric that had yet to been sewn...I think I may still have some of that fabric :)
