moments in the mommyhood - no baby yet

image via cathy thorpe

ok folks, it's time to get the baby mojo flowing.....the house is ready, my folks are in town, my hubby is done the insane tax season, my daughter is excited....we just need the baby!

i'm officially overdue. yep, overdue - bah! the due date was may 8th and it's come and gone. i hate that word...overdue. it makes me feel like some kind of weird cheese in your fridge that you buy and get excited to eat and then you just get sick of waiting for it to taste just right and you forget about it and then one day find it sitting there, sticking it's imaginary tongue out at you in the fridge saying "i'm rotten now....you can't eat me". i feel like it gives me an expiry date....yuck! oh well, what do you do. i'm just trying to be patient and wait for the little bean to come and meet us all.

any of you ladies in the same boat as me? i've been down the induction path before and don't want to go there again. what's your best tips? and yes, i've heard all about the nipple stimulation, sex, tea and stair climbing...i'm desperate for some new ones girls! help.....i don't want to sit on the fridge shelf by myself anymore...haha, all us "overdue" ladies let's unite!

  1. My daughter was born 6 days after her due date. In the week before she was born, I tried everything I could to get her to come out, including walking for miles and miles. Nothing worked. She finally came when she was ready. On the fifth day after her due date, I remember just breaking down and crying in the shower before bed, begging God to just hurry up and let me have my baby. My contractions started a few hours after that.....

  2. LOL, I love the comment above mine. "I remember just breaking down and crying...begging God to just hurry up and let me have my baby. My contractions started a few hours after that."

I'm pregnant with number 5. NOTHING ever got them started except the one time I took castor oil (which I swore I'd never do). I don't expect anyone's going to sell you a bottle of castor oil as pregnant as you are and you really do have to know how to use it so I wouldn't suggest that!

It's normal to go two weeks late for some women. It's just the longest wait of our lives. Good luck! I really feel for you. I would probably start a project I should never be able to finish and act like I'm never going into labour. Murphy's law might kick in LOL. Because, as they say, a watched pot never boils.

  3. Girl you're not on the cheese shelf by yourself.. I was due May 9, so I'm right there with ya with a little spot of green starting to show!! Everytime the phone rings, I just roll my eyes. I'm going to tape record myself saying "NO I'M NOT IN LABOR". My husband started his leave time on Monday and yesterday at 10am I sent him to work. I couldn't take it anymore.. he was just sitting there staring at me trying to telepathically make the kid come out. I wish I had some glimmering words of advice but alas... I've tried all the "Ole Faithfuls" and nothings working here either (but yet this is our first sooo I expected a little delay.. not to mention HE IS HIS FATHER'S SON).

Keeping you in my thoughts as we ripen... mmmm but it will be good with that bottle of vino i've been drooling over... silver lining :D

  4. Dates are just guidelines in my opinion...the babe will come out when it's ready...nature is on it's own time clock.

In the meantime, spoil yourself and relax as much as possible...we're all rooting for you! xo

  6. Sorry, I can't help you, my first daugther came 12 days before and the second one 28 days before. All I can say is: LUCKY YOU, you have had plenty of time to prepare the house, the clothes, the cards... :-)))))
Don't worry you'll have too short nigthts soon enough!!!!

  7. I took castor oil as well. On the day I was 13 days overdue, and knew I had to go to the hospital the next day to be induced. Like Girl says, you definitely do need to know what you are doing and have someone give you advice about it, but I would do it again if necessary. Currently I am 33 weeks pregnant, so we will see what happens this time...

  8. So sorry baby hasn't come yet. Two of my babies were almost a week late. I guess they just come when they are ready. Stay positive and enjoy the time you have left with only one child! :)

  9. As you know I was induced with the first 2 but thankful got to go into labour all on my own this last time. I have no advice for getting baby out, except that the last couple months of my pregnancy I kept nagging my hubby to get the dresser/change table finished (he made it) because baby wasn't coming until it was done. No word of a lie my first contraction came as I was putting the last diapers in the drawers half an hour after he put the finishing touches on it.

so do you have any not quite yet baby projects finished?

  10. name her...
    she is waiting ;)
and I agree with others... some babies just need more time in the oven.. or some bodies need a little help... it's ok!
you aren't OLD cheese.. OLD wine..yummmm:) There are many things that get better with time!
    see you later!

  12. i used herbs and then castor oil and it worked all 3 times! i even planned my last birth at home since i knew i would be in control! good luck and safe delivery!

  13. Oh, I am sure you are ready to get that baby out!! You are too funny - don't worry you're not old cheese, you're just aged :-) which is always super delicious!

I had my hubby drive me over the train tracks over and over again when I was "overdue" with my first. It didn't put me into labor, but at least the next day I was dilated more......still ended up being induced - but train tracks might work for you!!

Hope that baby comes soon Shannon!!

  14. When I started to get uncomfortable while pregnant with my son (my third) I drank a couple mugs of raspberry leaf tea a day....It is supposed to ease labor and delivery too. Be careful of caster oil as it make the baby poo too and could cause a bowel movement before birth.
Positive birthing vibes headed your way!

  15. Oh honey I feel your pain!! I wish I had some good old wives tales to share with you... but none of them worked for me either. I was induced with my first and went into labour 6 hrs before I was due to be induced with my second... maybe you'll get lucky like that too? M

  16. I ate way too much pineapple after my midwife suggested it. Not sure if that helped but one thing that I think did was knowing that if i didn't go into labour the day i did, the next day the castor oil drink was waiting for me. I refused to have to drink that so needless to say I was in labour that evening and he was born the next morning. Of course four sweeps probably helped it too but leave that for the professionals. little bean is just so comfy, she'll be here soon. Hang in there, i share your feelings with being 12 days overdue with Parker. Not fun but you know its got to end one day soon.

  17. My 1st was 9 day late, and I wound up with an emergency C after 2 days of natural labor (he wound up being 11lbs, 9oz, 23" long)... #2 couldn't be induced, because they can't induce after a C... but my drs forced me to at least schedule my C... I scheduled it for 6 days past my due date, but I was SO scared! my midwife "suggested" that I google search castor oil, vodka, orange juice cocktails, and that I take them at 6 and 8 pm the evening before I wanted to go into labor. I figured ANYTHING was better than another C, so I did it.
I had HORRIBLE diarrhea from about 10pm-1am, and then labor kicked in, and my baby was born easily and naturally by 3:15am! (and only 8lbs 6oz, 21"!)
it's obvi not safe if you have any medical problems, but if you're like me, and perfectly healthy, and the baby is healthy, and you're close to the hospital, I'd highly recommend it!

  18. My sister and her sister-in-law swear by mopping.

  19. my doctor "stripped my membranes". it was a little painful, but it did the trick, along with having sex and pushing a car several feet by myself. ask your dr. good luck!

  20. I feel for you, i was over due too!! too add to the pressure the doctor made me get an ultrasound to "see how big this baby is." no first time mom wants to hear that!!! I tried everything you listed and nothing worked. I did have an induction 4 days after my due date and had a really great labor. so good inductions are possible!! since your folks are in town, you should take the time for a nice relaxing date night. you never know that might be all you need...

  21. Hang in there Shannon! My last baby was 5 days over due. Even after breaking my water it took a few hours for labor to start (even with all of the old tricks... boy my nipples were sore! TMI?). These babies, they just have their own schedule. But watch out... my overdue baby is the clingiest one of the bunch! :-D

  22. My son, Charlie, was scheduled to be forced out on his due date at 9 am. I was NOT HAPPY about it but I went along with doctor's orders. At about 7:30 am that morning, I started having contractions. They became so strong I asked my sister to meet us at the hospital to pick up and watch over my then 4-year-old son. So glad she did, because we showed up at the hospital at 8:45 am and Charlie was born at 9:16 am. I was thrilled that my little one, in the end, got to choose his own birthday!

Just starting following your blog... good luck to you and your baby, who I'm sure will be here any minute!

  23. Oh man.... I feel for ya.
I was 7 days late for all three pregnancies... And I wanted to die, AND scream at everyone that called. NO BABY!!!
The only thing that worked every time was my midwife doing a good ol' cervical sweep and I went into labour that night.
Hugs to you and send labour vibes your way....

  24. Awwww, thanks ladies! Some great tips, suggestions and experiences in here!
With my first daughter she was the full 2 weeks overdue and I had a rough time with the inducement.
With this one, things have just been sllloooowwww. I've been having early labor contractions for 2 days now and have had 2 sweeps done. I'm 3 cm dilated but the babies head just doesn't want to come down. Needless to say I'm exhausted and have more to go...haha.
Here's to hoping things progress without induction and same for the rest of you wonderful ladies in the same boat as me. Let's get mopping, tea drinking and dancing. I'm even ready to go 4x4ing!

  28. i love this post. so funny! and the image too.
TALK to your baby!!! say "come out and play"

  29. well I am almost 7 months so I am not overdue, but there are a lot of pressure points in your feet that can stimulate labor... so go in for a really good foot massage/pedicure... then your toes will look lovely and it will feel divine and maybe it will trigger something. if that doesn't work try jumping jacks ;)
oh and I had a foot massage and within 24 hours my daughter was born.

  30. have you asked your doctor about stripping your membrane? that sent me into labor within 24hours. a little uncomfortable...but so worth it!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Like a piece of cheese in the fridge? You are SO funny! Hang in there! I ended up having to be induced both times. First was horrible, but I was amazed at how easy and smooth it was on round two. Good luck!

  32. OH MY Shannon! I love your humor!! I was hoping to see a baby post today but she'll come when she's ready...right!? Wishing you the best!!!

  33. I know how you feel, I was overdue all 3 times! 15 days the first time (they let me go that long as my Dr was the on call Dr the 15th day- sched induction), 7 days and 10 days. Sending you lots of happy thoughts that today is your day!!

  34. I hear squats and lunges are a good way to help things along.

    ReplyDelete
  35. wow...you will be just fine. Enjoy your time now. go for some walks. try rubbing underneath your ankle bone on the inside of your feet. that kinda indented part. That is your reflexology points for your girl stuff...that always gave me contractions, but never put me into labor. I also bounced on a yoga ball while sitting in front of the tv. I think that helped to dilate me

you will be just fine :)

  36. OH!! I was hoping baby had arrived. Wish I had some wisdom little bro was 42.5 weeks and came on the day I was scheduled for inducing.... good luck sending you head down and out thoughts!!

  37. walk the curb. find a curb walk it with one foot on the curb the other on the ground... the higher the curb the better... it moves the baby down... thats how i got my son!

    ReplyDelete
  38. ask your OBGYN or midwife for a "sweep" worked for me twice :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. 2 sweeps down....read above in the comments to see what i've been trying :)

p.s. you guys seriously rock! thanks for all the advice!

  41. Did Acupuncture the morning I went into labor. I was nearly 2 weeks overdo. My acupuncturist said he had had great success with his treatments over the years. And it is pain free! GOOD luck.

  42. I was 10 days overdue. In the last week I felt like I tried all the tricks (except castor oil + raspberry leaf tea). Had my membranes striped twice, walked a lot, crawled up stairs on all fours, accupressure points in the feet and hands, sex, someone suggested pepperoni pizza etc. etc. In the last 2 days before my son was born I ate a whole pineapple each day. A few hours before I went into labor I had Mexican food and kept pounding the spicy salsa, which is what my husband credits. Either it was a cumulative effect of everything I tried, or he was just ready!

  43. try going into super-relaxation mode. I was really stressed about being induced, and one night after a good cat with hubby I just talked my baby down :) Sounds nuts I know, but I think I relaxed myself enough for her to be able to drop. She was born at 12:26 pm the next day.

    ReplyDelete
  44. reflexology or acupuncture!
i went into labour one day before i was to be induced because of the reflexology i recieved. or maybe baby just came on his own and i got to enjoy a nice foot rub. either way, it doesn't hurt to try!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I was induced one way or another with my first 4. Number 5 I waited until I was 11 DAYS past my due date and had THE MOST perfect, wonderful natural birth. Hang in there and just be patient!!

  46. My grandma decided to vacuum out her car when she was preg with her first. Her water broke when she was climbing over the front seat. Doh!

My sister took 4 TBS (NO MORE!) castor oil and her overdue baby came later that day. That is how I came into the world as well. Just plan on spending a lot of time on the toilet :)

My sister had reflexology done and the overdue baby came the next day.

I was always early... but I'm not going to rub it in :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. My Sister-in-law did Castor oil...it worked within 12 hours! Good luck!

  48. Castor Oil is the way to go! I took it with orange juice and within 4 hours I was in labor, 4 hours later my beautiful baby girl was here! I was 4 days overdue

  49. I can't believe I'm fixing to type this for all the world to see...that's why I'm posting anonymously. A vibrator totally did the trick for me. Eeek. My water broke 4 hours later. :)

  50. For me relaxing and resting gets me going. I had baby #2 3 months ago and I didn´t go into labor until I just did some relaxation techniques and guided meditation. But for me I never thought of my due date being a big indicator of when my babies would arrive. I thought for sure that I would go 2 weeks over and I was fine with that. #1 was born 7 days past the due date and #2 was 4 days past. Both times I just tried to enjoy alone time with hubby and child #1. Me and hubby would go out for dinner and just enjoy each other because I knew and hubby knew that my body and time would not be my own for a year because of breastfeeding. Anyway, baby comes when it comes and I hope the experience will be beautiful and quick.

  51. PS. I´m an all natural girl so both boys were born with out any drugs except I did ask for the numbing cream for my perineum just in case.
